Toucan are an upbeat five-piece function band based in south-east Kent. Providing their fun vibes are Jess Norman (vocals), David Norman (keys), Ben Daintree (guitar), Laurence Turpin (bass) and Jonny Ward (drums). You can expect a sweet blend of both classic and modern soul, funk, disco and pop - pretty much anything that'll keep you on your feet!
Jess trained in music, dance, musical theatre and drama from a young age and she attended the Academy of Contemporary Music in Guildford, receiving a BA in Music Performance, specialising in Technical contemporary singing.
She has performed in various function bands for over 10 years and performed at several prestigious venues including the Royal Albert Hall, Her Majesty's Theatre in London, and the British Council and Irish Embassy in Sierra Leone. Jess teaches singing, songwriting and musical theatre and is passionate about building up self confidence in people to help them achieve success.
Having grown up playing electric guitar, Ben has played in all sorts of bands, from funk/rock and indie bands to working with gospel choirs. He's played and headlined venues and festivals all around England, supporting some awesome artists along the way like Toploader and High Tyde. His music has been featured by BBC Introducing and has been given air-time by the BBC and other radio stations on numerous occasions. But most importantly he just loves funky guitar.
David splits his time between working as an assistant architect, a photographer and playing keys at various gigs across the UK. His artistic achievements include a 2014 NADFAS Scholarship and being a finalist at the 2013 John Downton Awards. He can often be found hopping on the train to London to see his favourite musicians which include the likes of Cory Henry, Tom Misch, Tosin Abasi, Tommy Emmanuel and Mark Knopfler.
Laurence has been a professional bass player for nearly a decade, playing live to thousands and on numerous studio recordings. Laurence has been influenced by bass players such as John Deacon, Pino Palladino, Chris Wolstenholme and Leland Sklar. In his free time, Laurence enjoys silent discos, video games and eating Mexican food.
Jonny has been playing drums since he was 9 years old, since then he's completed all his grades and worked professionally since 2010. With a high level of gigging experience, he's had the opportunity to play at large venues to many hundreds and, sometimes, thousands of people all over the country. You'll often find this jolly little tyke flexing his hamster muscles at Crossfit or producing hip hop beats from his house.
